The other day, I went to an eye doctor appointment. My doctor’s office is located at the Nanuet Mall.
In the humble abode I call Rockland County, we have two malls. We have the Nanuet Mall and the Palisades Center.
The Palisades Center is a disgustingly large mall, complete with an ice rink, a ferris wheel, a merry-go-round, a movie theater, an IMAX theater, and every possible store you could think of. Four floors large, this mammoth monstrosity is now “the mall.” It is one of the largest malls in the country.
I grew up with the Nanuet Mall, a much smaller mall. I believe in 1997 or 1998, the Palisades Mall opened for the first time. It was the “new mall.” The Nanuet Mall was “the old mall.” But for at least five years, the two malls remained relatively competitive, although you could tell the Nanuet Mall was on its way out.
Like three or so years ago, (and up until that point I still got my haircut at the Nanuet Mall), I had needed to get something in the Nanuet Mall; so I went around with my mom. We just noticed that all the stores we used to go to had been closing. Day-by-day… month-by-month… the mall was just shutting down. My family and I always used to go to the Nanuet Mall instead to avoid the HORRIBLE traffic around the Palisades Mall.
Now there have been plans to knock down the mall. I recently went last week for my eye doctor appointment at the Nanuet Mall. It was so depressing. The mall looked dead. The people, unfriendly. The parking lot, unmaintained. Pot-holes and uneven concrete covered the landscape. I wanted to go in an explore the mall and see what my childhood has become, but I just couldn’t. 1) I’ve heard it is a little unsafe with the crowds inside. 2) It’s just sad. My childhood, encompassed in this large building - what used to be the “mall” - and became the “old mall” - and now people don’t even acknowledge its existence - is desolate and deserted. Save a few stores that are still open, it is mostly dead. What a travesty!
